CoSA-Preservica Practical Digital Preservation core training webinar module 1

March 8, 2016 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm EST

Open and of interest to anyone grappling with digital preservation challenges, CoSA’s Practical Digital Preservation exposes participants to workflows, processes and real-world examples of digital preservation in action.

The series, which launched in Fall 2015, combines longer format core digital preservation modules such as this one (free – registration is required) with supplemental “How-To” webinars ($25 for non-CoSA members).

This 2 x 2 hour online workshop is an in-depth practical training into the key concepts and processes of Digital Preservation reinforced by demonstrations of the complete OAIS (Open Archival Information Systems) (ISO 14721) lifecycle – ingest, data management, storage, preservation, administration and access.

The aim is to move beyond Digital Preservation acronyms and theory to give participants a fuller appreciation of the practical workflows, processes and considerations of real-world usage. The session will include specific examples of preserving Emails, long-term non-permanent records and websites as well include a next steps summary to outline how attendees can move their digital preservation project on to the next stage.

Module 1 (2 hours)

  • Why do we need Digital Preservation?
  • The fundamentals and standards for preserving digital content
  • Understanding Metadata, Fixity and File Characterization
    • including example of Email preservation
